Turning trash into treasure at the Convo Center
April 28, 2011
DeKALB | DeKalb residents will make someone’s trash their treasure this weekend.
The Convocation Center will host its third annual Convo Colossal Clean Sweep from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Three years ago, the Convo needed an end-of-the-year program to host and organizers came up with this event as a way to get the community involved. Heather Priest, marketing manager for the Convo, said the event has grown since it first started in 2009, with only 80 to 100 vendors last year.
“This year we have over 150 vendors from all over, coming from as far as two hours away,” Priest said.
Priest said there will be “everything under the sun,” and more.
“Every year we’ve had a guy come in and sell his huge collection of DVDs,” Priest said.
This is the first year the Convo Colossal Clean Sweep will be sponsored by another organization, Priest said. The organization is Operation Lifesaver, which is dedicated to educating people about railroad safety.
Priest said there will be a booth by the kids’ corner with a conductor who will educate the children. Also by the kids’ corner, there will be a “chalk-of-fame” where all the children can trace their handprint in chalk and put their name by it, Priest said.
Last year over 3,000 people came out for the two-day event, Priest said.
“We’re very excited to do something for and with the community,” Priest said.
Admission is $1, and children under the age of 6 are free.
