Don’t graduate NIU without tasting DeKalb’s music scene

By Connor Rice

For many NIU students, the end is nigh.

But before you get suited-up for graduation, take some time to experience a side of the city you might have never been privy to.

There are some great concerts coming up this week, with a little something for everyone. Take a break from that final paper and check out one of these awesome shows.

WHAT: Rock for Rights

WHEN: 6 p.m. Wednesday

WHERE: The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway

COST: TBA

WHY: Sponsored by the NIU group STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition, Rock For Rights collects local, socially-conscious artists like the MotherFolkers, the Stockyards and Emanuel Vinson to raise money and awareness regarding the current dictatorship in Burma. With a chance to see several Chicago artists as well, this is going to be a night that you won’t want to miss, for the entertainment as well as the cause.

WHAT: From Chaos (311 tribute)

WHEN: 9:30 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Otto’s, 118 E. Lincoln Highway (+21)

COST: $7

WHY: All mixed up, don’t know what to do? Head over to Otto’s for the From Chaos show. This 311 tribute band has already played Otto’s several times this year, so it must be a pretty convincing show to keep getting the gig.

WHAT: Mike and Joe

WHEN: 10:30 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Starbusters, 930 Pappas Drive

COST: ?

WHY: Mike and Joe have become fixtures at ‘Busters. Claiming to be one of the “most watched cover bands in the Midwest,” these guys, like From Chaos, have to be doing something right if they keep coming back to the same venue. Song catalog ranges from U2 to Fallout Boy.
