The DeKalb County Clerk’s Office is consolidating and redistricting voter precincts across the county.

Every 10 years, the county clerk analyzes the voter precincts within DeKalb. According to a release from the DeKalb County Clerk’s Office, precincts are units for voting and redistricting municipalities within the county.

In DeKalb County, precincts are to be made up of no less than 500 and no more than 800 registered voters.

According to the release, DeKalb County has grown 18 percent over the last 10 years, increasing the county’s population to over 105,000 residents, with 57,000 registered voters across the county.

DeKalb County Clerk & Recorder John Acardo said the County Clerk’s Office has identified nine precincts that currently hold over 1,000 registered voters. The County Clerk is consolidating and adding precincts in order to increase voter convenience, he said.

According to the release, these nine precincts have a high demand for voting. A list of the nine precincts can be found at www.dekalbclerk.com/PrecinctReview.html.

“Our philosophy is that we want to make it as easy as possible for voters to make it to the polls,” Acardo said.

Acardo said one point of focus was student voting on the NIU campus. Students living in the Neptune Residence Hall were required to go to the Best Western, 1212 W. Lincoln Highway, in order to vote. Acardo said once the redistricting is finished, all NIU students living on campus will be able to vote in one location.

“Precincts are a way for the County Clerk to manage the voting areas for the administration of elections,” Acardo said.
