Tennis readies for strong weekend
April 21, 2011
With regular season competition coming to a close, both NIU men’s and women’s tennis teams hope to end on a high note.
The Huskies (11-14 overall, 1-3 MAC) have matched their highest win total since 2008.
With one match left in the regular season, men’s head coach Patrick Fisher knows his team needs to stick to the game plan in order to do some damage in the MAC tournament, which starts April 27.
“Our mindset will be the same as it has been all year,” Fisher said. “We’ve gotta win at one and two doubles, and we’ve gotta win at one, two, three singles. Then we have to hope someone at four, five or six can step up and win a match for us.”
The last regular season match for the Huskies will be on April 24 at Buffalo (9-7, 1-2). With a win in its final match of the season, NIU has the opportunity to win 12 matches in a season, something it hasn’t done since 2004.
With young and talented players at the top of NIU’s lineup, including Maksym Bartiuk and Axel Lagerlof, the Huskies have a chance to defeat Buffalo for the third time in the last four seasons. A win would also give NIU a fourth place finish in the MAC instead of fifth.
The women Huskies (2-14, 0-6) have struggled all season long, and hope to snap their season-long conference winless streak before the weekend is over.
Just one season removed from a 1-7 conference record, NIU hopes to snap its 12-match conference losing streak, and turn around a three-year span in which the program has gone 2-20 in the MAC.
Playing back-to-back home matches against conference opponents to conclude the season, the Huskies will take on Western Michigan at 1 p.m. Friday, and against Bowling Green at the same time on Saturday.
