Kites Over Sycamore provides family-friendly fun atmosphere

DeKALB | The annual Kites Over Sycamore event will provide springtime entertainment for families and kite enthusiasts alike.

This free event will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kar-Fre Flowers, 1126 E. State St. Kar-Fre Flowers Manager Michelle Schulz said the business hosted the event for eight years.

“Our intent is that it is a family-fun event,” Schulz said. “We wanted to do something that would get families out of the house and enjoying each other’s company.”

Schulz said there will be a number of activities for children and families in which to participate. Kar-Fre Flowers will have an over-sized bowling set, driveway chalk drawing and two kite-making workshops.

Schulz said the turnout every year depends on the weather, but she has prepared indoor activities as well.

“We offer a number of activities that can be done inside Kar-Fre Flowers, where it is always nice,” Schulz said.

Families can choose from two different designs when building their kites. Schulz said the bumblebee kite is free and is a design that children of any age can complete, while there is a nominal fee for the sled kite, which requires more adult involvement.

At noon, there will be a kite fly in the Sycamore Park Annex, located just behind Kar-Fre Flowers. Schulz said people can fly the kites they made or bring their own.

“We sometimes get kite enthusiasts during the kite fly,” Shultz said.

Le Print Express, 2446 Sycamore Road, will also sell T-shirts during the event.

David Perkins, technology specialist and designer at Le Print Express, said T-shirts will be $12 each. For each shirt sold, $3 will be donated to the Red Cross.
