My colleague Jack Baker is right and wrong. Yes, Rebecca Black’s “Friday” is a bad song, but I would never say it is “the epitome of everything that is wrong with music.”

If anything, Rebecca Black is a copycat. She’s taking what she sees as being popular and putting her own spin on it.

If we want to send Black to the gallows, then the Black Eyed Peas need to go first.

I’m sorry that posting these lyrics has made this blog entry a whole lot longer than it needs to be. But really, if you’re going to hammer Black for telling you the days of the week, then we should scream at the Black Eyed Peas for doing the same thing.

Honestly, even though I agree with Baker’s assertion that pop songs are terrible, the sad fact of the matter is that this is what is popular.

Black may be “the worst artist ever” and “Friday” may be “the worst song ever,” but her music video has garnered over 38 million views as of this writing. For a 13-year-old who relies on Auto-Tune, that’s pretty good.

And as for the Black Eyed Peas, the album that featured “I Gotta Feeling” is considered one of the best selling albums of 2009.

I admit that I sit on a high horse when it comes to music. I love metal and other kinds of metal. But not everyone enjoys listening to every Iron Maiden song ever, and I’ve come to terms with that. I’ve tried playing an Iron Maiden song other than “The Trooper” or “The Number of the Beast” at a party or some social gathering; I usually get shot down.

So as much as I want to rag on Black and Fergie, they seem to know what the people want. Sometimes, they’re not sure if they want to kick it in the front seat or sit in the back seat.
