Sycamore City Council passed three labor agreements

Sycamore | Sycamore City Council unanimously passed three ordinances regarding labor agreements with police, fire and municipal employee labor groups.

The first of the three revisions was a labor agreement between the Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council, representing Lodge No. 133. The members agreed to reopen some provisions in order to help prepare a balanced 2012 fiscal year budget, according to the city council agenda.

“We were able to fashion a new agreement with a unique resolution,” said City Manager Bill Nicklas.

Changes to the agreement include a proposed wage increase that was changed from two percent to one percent on May 1 and Nov. 1. Hours for patrol officers were changed from ten hours to 12 and sick and holiday leave have been adjusted to reflect the change in daily hours. The new agreement expires on April 12, 2012.

Another ordinance passed by the council deals with the International Association of Firefighters. The new agreement called for an extension of a platoon system for emergency callbacks, the extension is to April 30, 2012. The city previously had a mass callback system for emergency personnel to respond to emergencies. The platoon system is a more selective callback system and helps control the city’s overtime costs. Incoming or on-duty personnel now play a larger role in making tactical judgements regarding specific emergency needs, according to the meeting agenda.

In another agreement between Sycamore and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the city council approved a 1 percent wage increase on May 1 and a 1 percent wage increase on November 1. This agreement expires on April 30, 2012.

The council also approved a proposal for a furniture package for the new addition to the police station. Mayor Ken Mundy said this was necessary because he has seen officers work from folding tables and chairs. Rieke Office Interiors of Elgin offered the best overall bid package and will oversee the furniture installation, according to the agenda.
