Northern Star Reporting Ethics Are Questionable
February 8, 2011
Dear Mr. Killiam,
I am writing to again express my concern with your reporting ethics.
As I shared via email and our multiple phone conversations, the blog you published January 18th about my son, Kordero Hunter is defamatory and consists of multiple erroneous facts.
It is disturbing that you would publish incriminating information without knowing or caring to know accurate facts. Moreover, I question why the blog about my son is the only one that doesnt mention a final disposition, such as “case is still pending in court”, “case is administratively closed”, etc. Doesn’t my son deserve fair treatment as the other alleged offenders?
While I appreciate you updating the blog following our conversation today 2/8 with the disclaimer about “… all are presumed innocent until proven guilty…”, this is not enough. I have spoken with the campus police who explained their procedures for reporting offenses (i.e. the daily crime log) and I was informed that they merely report what the complainant reports, thus it is quite possible that they do not have all the facts or that what the complainant is reporting is not accurate. The Seargeant suggested that when my son goes to court, he files a voluntary statement that will be added to this report.
For the abovementioned reasons, I am again requesting the retraction of this blog or an added statement referencing that this “case is pending in court”.
Sincerely,
Kim Hunter-Bradley
