Film fest the result of dynamic formula

DeKALB | Outside, there will be below zero temperatures. Inside, there will be pictures of bicycles in weird places.

Dynamic Formulations, a film fest and art show, will take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. at The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway. There will be an additional showing at 9:30 p.m. Both screenings are free to attend.

Vicky Boland, junior time arts major, is curating Dynamic Formulations and also presenting her work.

“I just decided to put on a show because there’s not many opportunities given like this,” she said. “I wanted to create one for people if they wanted to show their support.”

Her piece, “The Art of Manliness,” examines what it means to be manly and the stereotypes that come with the public’s view of being a man.

“I found an article from a men’s health magazine that said ‘You have to do this to be a man,'” she said. “I kind of got offended and thought it was kind of interesting, It’s such a broad and kind of heavy topic, so I decided I would try to talk about it.”

Other videos include topics involving gender, video recycling, the environment and self-help. “Animalia,” a 15-minute piece from Bart Woodstrup, time arts visiting assistant professor, will also be shown. The video, which features hand-drawn animation, is an “inter-species fairytale” about a girl who wishes she could fly.

Julie Dobrinski, senior photography major, will be showing a series of photos of dissected fruits and vegetables.

“It’s very vibrant,” she said. “I’m pretty much trying to show how the food group is underrated and overlooked and we’re kind of entranced by artificial colors and fleshy textures.”

Boland hopes that people will come out for the unique experience.

“It’s not everyday when you can see your fellow students’ work on display and experience those different themes that are going to be portrayed in the films,” she said.
