Wiz Khalifa blazes his way to the Convocation Center

DeKALB | Roll out the green carpet.
“Black and Yellow” rapper Wiz Khalifa will perform at the Convocation Center at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 as part of the Campus Consciousness Green Carpet Tour 2011.
“Pretty Polly Productions out of Massachusetts puts together [the Campus Consciousness Tour] for universities,” said Heather Priest, marketing manager for the Convo. “The tour is half environmental campaign, half concert with the goal to leave a positive ‘green’ impact on the communities it visits–in our case, the Huskie community.”
Last week, Khalifa’s ode to Pittsburgh and the anthem for the Steelers reached the top of the music charts, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list. “Black and Yellow” marks the first number one of the 23-year-old’s career.
“We are always excited to have new artists that are on the verge of making it big,” Priest said. “Wiz Khalifa is no exception. We are extremely excited to have him here this spring.”
Khalifa has been making a name for himself in the hip-hop community over the last few years with his patented brand of stoner rap, as showcased on his 2010 mixtape Kush and Orange Juice. His next album, Rolling Papers, drops in March.
Opening the show is the up-and-coming 19-year-old Jewish rapper Mac Miller. Also from Pittsburgh, Miller released a slew of mitxapes last year, and like Khalifa, makes a lot of music about marijuana.
With that in mind, Priest does not think that the show’s 420-friendly artists will lead to problems with Convo patrons.
“The Convo is a smoke free facility and our staff is always observing and assisting our guests to remind them of our policy,” she said. “We have had several acts that are similar to this fan base, and this has not been an issue during the past shows.”
Tickets range from $32-37 and can be purchased at the Convocation Center box office, Ticketmaster.com, or by calling 800-745-000. Students with a valid NIU OneCard who purchase tickets at the Convo’s box office will receive a $5 discount.
Tickets go on sale on Thursday at noon for students and Friday at 10 a.m. for the general public.
