DeKALB | Over one hundred students went to Swen Parson Hall for FAFSA Fun Fest on Friday afternoon.

The Student Financial Aid Office, the Scholarship Office and the Office of Student Academic Success sponsored the event to help students fill out their federal aid forms for the 2011-12 academic year.

Jane Jordan, associate director of the Student Financial Aid Office, said last year over 1,400 students filled out their FAFSA forms before the March 1 priority deadline, more than previous years.

“So FASFA Fridays works; students came in to get help getting it done,” Jordan said. “The point of the fun fest is to celebrate with students and let them see how important it is that they get that FASFA done or just try to keep it in front of everybody’s mind.”

The MAP Grant priority deadline was suspended on April 19 last year, Jordan said in a previous interview. She said the date may be suspended even earlier this year, so filing FAFSA forms should be a priority for students.

Junior economics major Cesar Medina-Mejia said he attended the event because he procrastinated filling out his application last year.

“I know that it is imperative to fill out your financial aid application early, so the earlier you can do it the more rewards you will receive,” Medina-Mejia said.

The fest included a raffle, a pitch-in from various restaurants around DeKalb and an appearance from Victor E. Huskie.

Though the fun fest is over, Student Financial Aid will offer FASFA Fridays to help students do their FAFSA forms until the end of the semester, Jordan said.

Students can also head to the Financial Aid Office in Swen Parson Hall, Room 245 during business hours for help filling out their FAFSA forms.
