Lincoln Hall open after building evacuation

DeKALB | Lincoln Hall residents returned to their dorm after a sprinkler activation in one of the study rooms triggered the building’s fire alarm.

“I was sleeping. I actually thought it was my alarm clock,” said Mary Slowik, senior sociology major and Lincoln Hall A-wing resident, in regards to the alarm.

Gabriel Hernandez, freshman accounting major and a resident of Lincoln’s B-wing, said he was on his way into the shower when he heard the alarm.

“I felt nothing. I was like, ‘Alright, whatever,'” Hernandez said. “I didn’t want to go outside though.

Other Lincoln residents were caught off-guard. Hernandez’s floormate, freshman accounting major Travis Powers, said he was “in mid-dream” when the alarm went off.

Powers, clad in sleep wear, slipped on his flip flops and grabbed his coat before he went outside. Powers, Hernandez, and at least 25 other Lincoln Hall residents waited for about 50 minutes in the lobby of the Campus Recreation Center.

As of press time, there does not seem to be any indication that there was a fire in Lincoln Hall. Brad Hoey, team leader for media relations, said a sprinkler went off in an unoccupied study room. The sprinkler’s activation triggered the fire alarm.

Hoey said some of the water leaked into the basement, and that workers from Building Services and the Physical Plant were working to clear it up.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, but I do know that there is a lot of water on the floor in B-wing that I have to clean up,” said a Building Services worker.

As of press time, a portion of the main floor of Lincoln, as well as the basement beneath B-wing, were closed to the general public.
