I scream, you scream for local ice cream options
February 16, 2011
It is nearly time to indulge in a mountain of delectable ice cream treats. The only question is where to go.
There are three main places to choose from in the area including Dairy Queen, Ollie’s Frozen Custard and Culver’s.
DAIRY QUEEN
Dairy Queen, 1780 Sycamore Road, is one popular place to go for ice cream. Assistant Manager Anna Larson said it is due to keeping the customers interested in the product.
“One of the reasons we are very popular in the area is for the wide variety and for the fact we have a lot of choices with new blizzards each month,” Larson said.
Larson said that over the years Dairy Queen has had its ups and downs, but they have a loyal crowd of returning customers and are always seeing new faces. Besides ice cream, Dairy Queen also offers an assortment of food choices. They are open everyday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
OLLIE’S FROZEN CUSTARD
Joe Cranden, owner of Ollie’s Frozen Custard, 2290 Oakland Drive, in Sycamore said it is the quality of the frozen custard that keeps so many people coming back.
“It’s a frozen custard and not an ice cream,” Cranden said. “It’s whipped more so there’s less air, creamier texture and it’s smoother. We make everything fresh daily and we don’t serve anything older than the day we make it.”
Cranden also discussed the toppings and while most places use syrups, Ollie’s uses real fruit. Ollie’s spring hours are Sunday thru Thursday from 11:30 a.m until 9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Hours vary during the summer and fall seasons.
CULVER’S
They may be known for their butter burgers, but Culver’s ice cream is one of the trademarks that keep people coming back. Owner Amanda Corona said the best seller is the “Turtle,” which has all the toppings of a turtle sundae mixed in with vanilla custard.
Corona ice cream isn’t the only reason people come to Culvers, 1200 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore.
“One of the reasons is our guest services,” Corona said. “We also have a very high quality product and we make it fresh throughout the day, as opposed to other places.”
Corona said that Culver’s is located at 1200 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore.
