Kickstand Productions brings two big acts to DeKalb
January 24, 2011
Kickstand Productions has announced two huge shows coming to Otto’s this spring.
First and foremost, ‘80s punk/hardcore icon Henry Rollins will perform March 31 at Otto’s, 118 E. Lincoln Highway.
Rollins was the lead singer for the legendary Black Flag during (arguably) their most relevant years as a band.
His contribution to punk music can not be understated; if you or anyone you know has ever picked up a skateboard, moshed to aggressive music or seen the iconic black bars logo on a T-shirt, button or patch, you have been impacted by the most famous frontman in hardcore punk.
Furthermore, Rollins has acted up a storm. Bit parts in movies like Heat, Lost Highway, Dogtown and Z-Boys and others solidified his reputation even before his turn as a white supremacist gang leader on FX’s Sons of Anarchy. His intimidating physique and voice have brought him all across the world, spreading whatever message he is trying to convey. He has written books of poetry, has hosted multiple television and radio shows, toured the world both as a musician and poet and has inspired countless bands.
DeKalb should be freaking out over this announcement, seeing as Black Flag toured here in the 1980s, when this town was a hardcore punk haven. This show is guaranteed to be a once in a lifetime experience.
As if that wasn’t enough, April 13 brings legendary hip hop group House of Pain. Everyone on Earth has heard “Jump Around” at least once before, and I expect Otto’s to get sweaty while the band brings their reunion tour through our small cornfield town.
Everlast is back with the group, bringing this reunion full-scale credibility.
People seem to forget that they are an Irish-American rap group, also extensively popular in the subculture known as “Juggalos.” Face paint or not, you can bet I’ll be at this show, remembering feuds with Marky Mark and pretending like I didn’t hear their single for the first time when an 11-year-old version of myself first watched Happy Gilmore.
So, if you’re 21 or older, don’t miss these shows that have landed directly on our doorstep.
