DeKALB | An NIU freshman was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in the Marquette Park neighborhood of Chicago.

Marcus Miller, 18, of the 7200 Block of South Francisco Avenue of Chicago was shot in the 2600 block of West 71st Street, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Brad Hoey, team leader of Media Relations and Internal Communications, confirmed that Miller had been fatally shot, but no further information was available.

A representative from the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management was contacted, but was unable to provide further information.

Miller was a freshman and a resident of Grant North.

The Center for Black Studies will have a moment of silence and prayer in memory of Miller Dec. 6 at noon.

A card will be available to sign at the Center for Black Studies, and will be presented to Miller’s family, said Monique Shelton, senior organizational corporation major.

“We didn’t know him personally, but he is a part of the Huskie family,” Shelton said. “We want to show him and his family our support.”

A police investigation of Miller’s death is ongoing.
