An open letter to Clay Campbell
November 3, 2010
First off, a congratulations to you, Mr. Campbell, on your victory. Although we endorsed your opponent, we believed that both of you were qualified candidates for the position and that, no matter who was elected, you would have served DeKalb County admirably.
That said, we wish you the best of luck in the challenges ahead. You are entering a position that has received a lot of attention, both public and media, in regards to the homicide investigation of NIU student Antinette Keller.
As a community, we will look to you for updates on this case. We will also look to you for answers to our many questions, and we trust that you will answer them truthfully and to the best of your ability.
The Keller case has provoked new questions about the current situation of NIU and DeKalb, and the answers might be unsettling to some. How safe are we? Is there anything the police or NIU could have done to save Toni Keller? Why did she die? How can I protect myself from something like this? As the State’s Attorney, you will be at the forefront of answering these questions.
During your campaign, you expressed your dedication in making DeKalb and NIU a safe community. In light of the Keller case, we look forward to hearing about your initiatives.
Eventually, the public and media interest in this case will die down. But your vigilance for truth and justice cannot.
We wish you the best of luck in this case and in future ones.
