Deaf Pride hosts events all week to raise awarness

By Candice Beasley

Deaf Pride recognized “the deaf and hard of hearing community” from Nov. 1 through Friday.

Deaf Pride is known for hosting events making students aware of Deaf Culture through activities, programs and services. The events were open to all students to participate and support.

On Friday, they held a panel giving students the opportunity to ask questions. Deaf Pride members Sara Bianco, American Sign Language (ASL) instructor; Taylor Hartman, junior business administration major and Joseph Lellman, senior health education major, sat on the panel sharing stories about their experiences with impaired hearing, and answering any questions.

“I thought the week had a good turn out,” Lellman said.

He said he thought the Thursday event, “ASL Song, Poetry and Stories,” had the best turnout and was the best out of the week because the audience was really involved.

Deaf Pride did a performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” After the performances, the audience was given the opportunity to learn “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz, in sign language and dance.

DeafPride encourages students to come out to their meetings held every other Wednesday. The next meeting will be at 9 p.m. Nov. 17 in Wirtz Hall Room 202.
