NIU punter Josh Wilber kicks during the Huskies’ game against University of Illinois.

At 5’11”, 237 lbs. Josh Wilber may be the most intimidating punter in the NCAA. It doesn’t hurt that he averages 40.4 yards a punt and has landed five of his 16 punts inside the 20.

The Phoenix, Ariz. native is making the biggest impact on the Huskies’ special teams through five games. That impact has quietly helped NIU to its current 3-2 record entering Saturday’s showdown with Temple.

“He’s done a great job and really punted the ball well,” said NIU head coach Jerry Kill earlier this season. “We’ve punted the ball better than we have since I’ve been here so I feel very good about that.”

If Wilber’s name is still unfamiliar, here’s a look at the senior’s resume throughout his career.

• He was named MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week after punting the ball five times for 245 yards (49 yards a punt) with a season-long of 56 yards against Illinois.

• Against Minnesota, Wilber averaged 39.8 yards a punt with a game-long of 52 yards, including two inside the 20-yardline.

• In 2009, Wilber was second in the MAC with an average of 40.5 yards on 28 punts, with four inside the 20.

• Against Idaho in 2009, Wilber averaged 49.5 yards a punt to go along with a career high 57-yard kick.

• Exiting junior college he was listed as the fourth best punter in the nation by ChrisSailerKicking.com and was a third team Junior College All-American.

• Prior to his kicking career at Phoenix College, Wilber served in the United State Marine Corps.

• His brothers, Jeff and Jimmy, also played football. Jeff was a kicker and wide receiver at Glendale Community College and Jimmy kicked with an AZFL semi-professional team.
