Go clubbing and learn about safe drinking

Grant Hall South was the place to be for nighttime fun Tuesday night.
Grant South opened its dining hall to host the “4G Night Club” for the second time. The club, which was open from 7 to 10 p.m., offers a dance floor, music and snacks free of charge.
“I love the music and the atmosphere,” said Glenn Chambers, freshman mechanical engineering major.
The club offers something informational to students as well. The main purpose of the 4G Night Club is to raise awareness about safe drinking habits.
“People are supposed to come to me,” said Ethan Gapinski, a sophomore psychology and philosophy major who was working security. “If they can say a fact about safe drinking, they get in.”
Alcohol safety was the overriding theme of the 4G Night Club. The walls of the club were plastered with tips about safe drinking such as “alternate between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks” and “don’t play drinking games.” Even making a song request requires some knowledge of alcohol safety, said senior English major Ben Hill, who took song requests and passed them along to the disc jockey.
“I ask the same question every time,” Hill said. “I ask, ‘How can going to parties in groups decrease the risk of sexual assault?’ If they give an acceptable answer, they can request a song.”
Snacks in the club include chips, pop, cookies and freeze pops. The Grant Hall Council pays for the food out of their budget.
Club-goers heard about the 4G Night Club in a variety of ways. Two ways they advertised was through word of mouth and posting flyers throughout campus.
“My [teaching assistants] told me to come,” said Shanequa Reeves, freshman social work major.
Not everyone was happy about the club being open, especially while dining hours were still going on in the other half of the dining room. One dining services employee complained about having to yell order numbers over the Jay-Z song being played loudly nearby.
The exact date of the next time the 4G Night Club will be open has not been decided on, but it will be sometime in November.
