Custodians just as important as other jobs
October 11, 2010
I would like to respond to your cover story on Wednesday, specifically one of the students you interviewed. You asked two students if they thought employers check Facebook before they hire someone. One of the responses was very offensive, and I’m surprised it made your front page.
Caitlyn Jones, a 19-year-old biology major, had this to say: “I think it depends on the employer. If you’re going for any important job, I think they do. If you’re going to be a janitor, I don’t think so.”
Don’t you see the problem here? Who is to say that a janitor is not important? Whether it be here at NIU, or any of our old primary and secondary schools, the janitors and the rest of the custodial staff are crucial to everyday operations.
In this economy, if you can hold any type of steady job, good for you.
Although some people might not view being a janitor as an important job, they are wrong. I don’t know exactly what Ms. Jones plans to do with her biology degree, but how would she feel if I told her that her job was not important?
