Huskie Briefs: Oct. 27

After intercepting a career-high two passes in Saturday’s victory over Central Michigan, NIU football’s Tyrone Clark was named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The two interceptions brought the sophomore linebacker’s season total to three. Clark became the first Huskie to pick off two passes in a game since Cory Hanson accomplished the feat in 2009 against Wisconsin.

For her play over the weekend, Amy Carr, of the NIU women’s soccer team, garnered co-MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. On Friday, the freshman goalkeeper stopped eight shots in a win over MAC East leading Miami (OH). While Sunday’s game against Bowling Green featured the freshman’s seventh shutout of 2010, placing Carr third in NIU annals for most shutouts in a single season.

Setting an NIU football record in Saturday’s victory over CMU, freshman Jimmie Ward blocked his third punt of the season. Prior to Ward, no NIU player had ever blocked three punts in a single season. Six previous Huskies had blocked two punts in a season.
