Alderwoman discusses her love for NIU and DeKalb
October 28, 2010
Alderwoman Pam Verbic works to keep the city of DeKalb in order as part of City Council, but her busy life includes much more than that.
Third Ward Alderwoman Verbic was appointed by Mayor Kris Povlsen at the end of January to fill a vacant position on the council left by former alderman Victor Wogen. Since then, she has worked to improve the community.
Verbic said she raised her four sons in the area, and three of them graduated from NIU.
She said her family is what inspired her to take the alderwoman position.
“That’s enough reasons to get involved,” Verbic said.
In addition to being part of city council and running a family, Verbic also works in the community.
“I work full time at State Farm Insurance and work on Sundays at Barb City Manor,” Verbic said.
While three different positions within the city may seem like a lot, Verbic said she is able to keep all her responsibilities separate.
“Any conflict of interest between my position on the city council and any other positions I hold is resolved by abstaining from discussion or voting on such matters, whether the conflict is perceived or financial,” Verbic said.
Verbic, who has lived in DeKalb all her life except for four years spent in Malta, said she enjoys the area.
“What I like best about this community are the people that care, whether they are permanent residents or just passing through like many of the students at NIU,” Verbic said.
Verbic said the best advice she can give students for success was said a long time ago.
“‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,'” Verbic said.
