Women’s soccer won, lost over the weekend

DeKALB | After getting blown out in the MAC opener against Toledo, the NIU women’s soccer team showed its ability to bounce back on Sunday afternoon.

Against the Rockets (6-2-2, 2-0 MAC) on Friday, the Huskies were able to keep it close in the first half, battling Toledo to a scoreless tie. With the second half whistle, though, the game quickly slipped out of NIU’s hands. The contest ended 4-0 in favor of the home team, with the Rockets’ goals coming in the 46th, 53rd, 67th and 85th minutes.

After watching the way her team came out in the second half, NIU head coach Carrie Barker didn’t expect her team to notch a win.

“We had a great first half,” Barker said. “But we just came out flat in the second half, and Toledo took advantage of that in the first few minutes. We ended up digging ourselves in a hole and you can’t do that against a good program like Toledo.”

At home on Sunday, NIU looked to break even on the weekend against a Ball State (6-4-0, 0-2) team that had won six of its first eight games. Throughout the game, NIU controlled the tempo of play. In the first 90 minutes of play, NIU netted five shots on goal compared to Ball State’s two. Cardinals goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler stood tall though, forcing the game into overtime.

In the fifth minute of extra time, Kylie Revelle took a corner kick from Megan Harry and headed the ball past Buehler to give the Huskies (5-4-0, 1-1) the win in their first overtime game of the year.

“I just did not want to run anymore,” Revelle said. “It was a great ball by Megan Harry and sometimes you just have to put your head down and just jump into the pile. I was just glad not to have to go into a second overtime.”
