Men’s soccer can’t ward off Blue Demons

The NIU men’s soccer team experienced a tale of two different halves Wednesday night.
The Huskies’ unbeaten streak extended to five games after a scoreless double-overtime draw with DePaul.
“In the first half, we did come out a little bit flat I think by our standards,” said NIU head coach Eric Luzzi. “Nothing really happened the first half. Neither team created much of anything; it was just kind of a vanilla half of soccer.”
This marked the second time this season that NIU (4-2-2) finished a match without scoring or conceding a goal. The first came against then No. 19 Portland.
The Huskies came out of halftime looking like a different team and outshot the Blue Demons (3-4-2) 22-7 after a 5-4 advantage in the first half.
“After the first half we realized that we weren’t playing our best,” said senior striker Juan Hoyos. “And we all knew that we can do so much better and really take it to them and hopefully get a win. Once that second half started, it was a totally different game.”
Both sophomore keepers kept everything out of the net with NIU’s Jordan Godsey making four stops and DePaul’s Joe Ferrari making seven saves, but neither really had a standout day.
“Their goalkeeper only made one good save,” Luzzi said. “It was really a matter of we had too many near misses; too many that just missed the post or the crossbar. Jordan didn’t really have to make a good save.”
The biggest chance to score came in the 62nd minute as a goal by Hoyos was waved off after he was called offsides, which the coaching staff believed to be the wrong call after reviewing the tape.
“I thought our response in the second half was really good,” Hoyos said. “I just thought that we need to put away our chances, including myself. We outshot them by a lot, and we should have scored a couple of times.”
