A former NIU student accused of possessing child pornography is out on bond.
John E. Burns, 25, of DeKalb posted 10 percent of his $100,000 bond late Wednesday morning, DeKalb County Jail officials said.
Burns is charged with 10 counts of aggravated child pornography. DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler said five counts are class X felonies because police believed Burns had intent to distribute. The other five count are for possession. Burns was arrested at the DeKalb Police Department, 200 S. Fourth St. Tuesday, after a joint investigation with Sycamore Police Department, Spangler said .
Investigators from Sycamore and DeKalb Police executed a search warrant at Burns’ home Tuesday morning and seized computer equipment along with storage media containing videos and images of child porn, according to a press release from the DeKalb Police Department.
Spangler said Sycamore initiated the investigation after detectives confirmed child pornography had been downloaded.
According to NIU officials Burns most recently attended the university this summer, but is not enrolled for the fall. His next court date is scheduled for Sept. 7.
