Campus residents recount Move In Day

This past Thursday morning a sea of red-shirted student volunteers swarmed residence halls in order to help move students into their rooms. The Stevenson Hall elevators were crammed with parents and new students ready to start or continue their college experience.

Anthony Cortes, senior criminology and Spanish major, was doing volunteer work for his co-ed service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega.

After a long day of helping students move-in, Cortes said he had some strange and memorable experiences.

Cortes said one student used six golf carts to carry all her luggage into her room while another student brought a sofa to move into Grant South. In addition, while Cortes was riding on the elevator he witnessed someone vomit, not due to nerves, but due to motion sickness, he said.

Some students took on the move into the residence halls by themselves. Freshman psychology major Clayton Sutherland started early Thursday morning to beat the crowd.

“It was actually a pretty easy move,” Sutherland said. “I started out knowing only one person, but I’ve met a lot of new people already.”

Sutherland sat talking with his Community Advisor Brittany Tidwell in front of the Stevenson floor elevators greeting newcomers as they walked out.

Outside along the steps, parents were guarding mounds of storage containers, bags of clothes and televisions.

Chris Deger, father of Katie Deger, incoming freshman special education major , was lounging outside enjoying the shade and taking a break from moving in.

“I had the honor of watching over everything,” Deger said. “But we came at the tail-end of move-in, so we missed the hoopla.”

As a freshman, Deger isn’t too worried about being away from home because she says she has felt very independent for most of her life. She is moving into a Stevenson suite with three roommates and is looking forward to relaxing.

“It’s been a hectic and weird moving day, but I’m glad I don’t have any crazy roommates,” Katie said. “I’m not even bothering going out tonight, I’m just looking forward to sleeping in.”
