MAC Championships approaching for Huskies

Weather and injuries plagued what could have been a better weekend for NIU women’s golf.

The Huskies were thrown into play as the practice round, along with the third round, was canceled for the inaugural Bradley Invitational due to inclement weather.

“Given a healthy Huskie team, I think we would have been in a better position after the first round and definitely would have climbed up a bit after the second round,” said NIU head coach Pam Tyska.

With the MAC Championships quickly approaching, the Huskies traveled to Peoria. The Huskies finished in ninth with a team score of 667 after ending the first day in 10th

Battling the flu, junior Kim Hunley led NIU with a T-22nd place finish and a score of 164. Hunley shot a 77 in the second round after shooting an 87 on day one.

“She was way off of her scoring average on the first day and felt really rotten,” Tyska said.

Freshman Kelsie Passolt dropped in the second round with an 85 after shooting an 80 on the first day to finish T-27th.

Juniors Mandi Vavrinchik and Michelle Caporusso, also battling the flu, added onto the NIU scoring with a T-36th (167) and a T-55th (171) respectively. Vavrinchik has been rehabbing a rotator cuff injury, for which she was redshirted last year.

In NIU’s final event before the MAC Championship, it will compete at the Loyola Invitational in Wilmette starting April 12.

Track and Field

The NIU track and field team shined off the track this past weekend at the Mike Poehlein Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. The Huskies had 12 top-eight finishes with one of them tying an outdoor school record.

Senior Shoshanna Brown leaped to a second-place mark of 38-4.25 in the triple jump to tie junior Brittany Houghton’s record from the 2008 Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships.

In the same event, Houghton finished in third with a jump of 37-2.25 and freshman Jenner Sio ended up in fifth with a jump of 36-9.75.

The long jump was just as successful for NIU as the triple jump was. Houghton, with a jump of 18-10, tied for third; Brown, with a jump of 17-9, took sixth; and freshman Deidra McIntosh took eighth with a jump of 17-7.5.

Men’s Golf

The NIU men’s golf team battled this past weekend at the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. The Huskies finished in 14th out of 16 with a 59-over par 911 on the par-71 Guyan Golf and Country Club Course.

After a solid showing in the previous week, sophomore Jeff Dick led NIU again with a 9-over par 222 which was good enough for a T-28th place finish.
