Sorority to auction date packages for charities
November 16, 1993
Are you desperate for a dinner date? Worry no more.
For the second year in a row, Sigma Lambda Sigma sorority in association with the Starlight Foundation of Chicago is holding a study break auction at 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium. Date packages for men and women will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. The $1 admission to the auction will be donated to the Starlight Foundation of Chicago.
Packages will include a date and outing for the couple to attend in the DeKalb and Sycamore area.
The sorority is hoping to raise $3,000 for the charity organization. Last year, they were able to raise $4,000 and send seriously ill children to Walt Disney World in Florida. This year the sorority is raising money to donate to the charity organizations “Make a Wish Program.”
“The ‘Make a Wish Program’ is designed to give kids choices with what they want to do,” said Kelly McBride, first vice president assistant for Sigma Lambda Sigma. “In the past, kids have met Michael Jordan or traveled to Disney World.”
Some of the proceeds also will go toward purchasing “interactive” toys for ill children. McBride said the toys are designed to help children with motor coordination disabilities. “The toys are supposed to make physical therapy fun for the kids,” she said.
The auction works in such a way that audience members are not allowed to see who they are bidding on until the bidding is over. Audience members are supplied with a personality profile to help in their decision. There are 29 date packages to choose from.
Sorority members count on the auction to raise a lot of money for their philanthropy project. “Last year the bidding went as high as $150 on certain packages,” said Regina Whitmore, first vice president. “On the average, most date packages went for about $40 to $50.”
The sorority already has raised money for the charity by holding a bake sale earlier in the semester as well as a penny voting project which chose candidates for the date package auction. The sorority also will be raffling off Chicago Bulls and Bears paraphernalia at a the end of the month. Tickets for the raffle will be available at the auction for $1.
