Nice yards in DeKalb will be recognized
April 26, 2009
The City of DeKalb will be rewarding residents’ pristine yards this summer.
The Yards of Distinction program allows those with beautiful yards to be nominated by their neighbors.
One house from each ward and one business citywide will win the Yard of Distinction award monthly.
Nominations are due a month prior to the month the yard is being nominated. The program will run from June through September.
“Nominations are due by May 15 for the month of June,” said Rudy Espiritu, assistant city manager, at the April 13 City Council meeting.
“[The city] really wanted to recognize those yards that go above and beyond,” Espiritu said.
DeKalb Mayor Kris Povlsen is in full support of the incentive plan.
“It’s a great opportunity for the community to get involved to enhance the look of our neighborhoods,” Povlsen said.
Each winner will receive an award certificate, a ‘nice yard sign’ and recognition at the first city council meeting of the month.
Povlsen hopes to see this program prosper.
“[The program] makes DeKalb a better place to live and to look at,” Povlsen said. “I certainly hope this will be a recurring program.”
