About a year later, Umphrey’s McGee returns to perform in DeKalb
March 18, 2009
Get ready for a night of hemp necklaces and pungent-smelling air as Chicago’s own jam band Umphrey’s McGee returns to the Egyptian Theater, 135 N. Second St., on April 17.
The Midwesterners last played in DeKalb on April 8, 2008, and the group donated a portion of the proceeds from the show to the Feb. 14 Scholarship Fund.
The musicians, now in the second decade of playing together, are touring the country to promote their new album “Mantis.” The album, which was recorded in Chicago, is the eclectic band’s first studio album to feature material never previously performed on the road before, according to the band’s Web site. Umphrey’s shows are notable for a continuous flow of music as the band’s members include elements of improvisation and extended solos. The two interrupted sets are usually separated with an intermission.
In addition to the show at the Egyptian, there will be an official afterparty at The House Cafe with a performance from U-Melt, as well as an unofficial afterparty at Otto’s with a performance from Mr. Blotto. The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can only be purchased online at www.kickstandproductions.net or at the door the night of the show if tickets don’t sell out.
