Director Alex Proyas’ latest film “Knowing” has swept the box office at No. 1 this weekend. Combining the thrills of “National Treasure,” the chills of “The Sixth Sense” and the action of “Final Destination,” this film is jam-packed with twists and turns that have audiences everywhere on the edge of their seats.

In this film, Nicolas Cage stars as a science teacher at a local university who has given up on the idea that “everything happens for a reason.” Cage’s character John Koestler previously lost his wife in a tragic hotel fire causing him to dive into a steady depression. The only thing keeping Koestler going is the presence of his son Caleb (Chandler Canterbury). When Caleb is handed a letter from a time capsule at his school, life changes for the father and son team.

Although Cage seems to take on his typical “solve the mystery” character, he adds a twist to the teacher by not being the hero everyone listens to. When Caleb brings home a letter with a bunch of numbers on it, Koestler quickly figures out that the numbers are dates and coordinates for different catastrophes. This time, it does not fall on Cage’s character to solve a puzzle.

Instead, Koestler must learn that everything does not happen by random chance.

Intertwined in the movie are references to different scientific theories and religious references that make the audience stop and consider personal beliefs about how the world works and what is to be believed about life after death. As the different characters try to stop a worldwide solar flare from destroying the planet, the film is mind-reeling as the audience attempts to think ahead about how Koestler should save the day.

With intense explosive scenes, car crashes and enticing acting, the film deserves to be in the No. 1 spot. “Knowing” is one of those movies that cannot be seen just one time. Each viewing will unlock the mysteries of the film more.

Warning: After viewing this movie, do not spoil the end of the film for your friends. It’s just too exciting.
