BGSU out-hits Huskies 18-9 in 2-game series; third game rescheduled

By NORTHERN STAR STAFF

Hits were not a plenty for the NIU baseball team this weekend but the Huskies were able to come away with a split with Bowling Green, with the third game of the series being postponed due to snow.

NIU won game one 6-4 behind the pitching performance of Chuck Lukanen, who went 7.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and three runs, while striking out five.

The Huskies started off the game at Ralph McKinzie Field down 3-0 in the third inning but rallied back in the bottom of the fourth with four runs.

“We always talk about answering back, and it was great,” said NIU head coach Ed Mathey. “Chuck Lukanen did a nice job of putting up zeroes to give us a chance to do it. Our kids have been opportunistic all year and have been working hard. That’s something that I hope that we continue to do.”

Shortstop Alex Jones was 1-5 out of the leadoff spot with two RBI, while the No. 3 and No. 4 hitters Jordin Hood and Dave Reynolds combined to go 2-for-7 with three runs scored.

Alex Beckmann was 0-2 for the game but drove in a pair of RBI.

Game two on Saturday proved not to be the best outing for the Huskies as Bowling Green took the victory 8-0.

NIU posted only three hits on the game coming from Joe Buonavolanto, Reynolds and Pat Minogue.

The Falcons posted two runs to take the first lead in the top of the fourth and added another in the fifth and seventh before tagging Chris Wakefield and Zach Badgley for four runs in the eighth inning.

Starter Nick Badgley went six innings allowing four runs, three earned on six hits and five walks. BGSU starter Matt Malewitz went 7.2 innings allowing three hits and recorded six Ks.
