SA names new senator, recognizes NIU Pagan Student Association

The Student Association returned to its Sunday evening meetings after coming back from Spring Break and being met with postponements.

Three of the six items on the meeting’s agenda were shelved for next week. Two student organizations called in to postpone their meetings with the senate. One prospective senator failed to appear, delaying the vote for his or her possible appointment.

“It’s been three weeks since our last meeting so it’s understandable that some scheduling issues come up when we try to schedule a meeting that far in advance,” said Speaker of the Senate Matthew Venaas.

For the remaining agenda, 28 of the senate’s 38 senators attended and voted to give SA recognition to a student organization. They also addressed one group’s request for supplemental funding and appointed a new senator to the senate.

The group seeking SA recognition was the NIU Pagan Student Association, a religious group that started in February and looks to provide spiritual fellowship, a place to celebrate pagan festivals and educate those who are not pagan.

The group was approved with one nay and one abstention.

“I’m excited,” said Paul Herrick, president of the group. “I think it’s really great that we got approved, especially so quickly and so supportively.”

Herrick expressed concern that paganism would not be greatly accepted because of the negative connotations it carries in the eyes of Christians, Jews and Muslims.

“I think it’s a matter of ignorance,” Herrick said. “People don’t know what we’re about. They don’t know what we do and what we believe.”

Concluding the meeting was the appointment of a new senator, Jaemin Robertson, sophomore political science major.

“I’m very enthusiastic, because I’ve always wanted to get involved with politics and government,” Robertson said. “This is a chance for me to further along my goals in life.”

The SA will hold elections on Tuesday and Wednesday for executive positions in the SA and the Campus Activities Board.
