Police advise caution after attempted robbery on campus last week

By NORTHERN STAR STAFF

NIU Police are advising people to exercise caution in their travel on and around campus after an attempted robbery by an assailant claiming to be armed.

The incident took place at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Annie Glidden Road near the University Plaza Apartments. The robber approached the victim, claimed to have a weapon (but did not display it) and demanded money.

Reports of a similar incident the next day on NIU’s West Campus have proven to be unfounded.

NIU Police are advising people to take extra precautions while traveling on foot and suggesting that they be aware of, and cautious around, individuals who seem to be hiding their face or otherwise acting suspiciously.

Police are urging people not to walk alone and to avoid poorly lit areas. They suggest that students take advantage of the department’s Late Night Ride Service from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. by calling (815) 753-2222. Anyone can request “Walk Along” service from the department’s Huskie Patrol between the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. by calling (815) 753-9658.
