Trailer for new ‘Star Trek’ movie promising

By ORLANDO LARA

When it comes to stars, I like mine wars-ed rather than trek-ed. But the latest trailer for the new “Star Trek” movie has made my geeky heart go all aflutter.

I got to give director J.J. Abrams a lot of credit for making the extra geeky world of “Star Trek” seem pretty intense. The trailer was non-stop explosions and awesomeness. And I don’t know if it’s good or bad yet, but the trailer looks like story that spans eight movies.

The film follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) as he goes through the Starfleet Academy and meets with the cast of the original show. It doesn’t seem like anything too mind-blowing, but tell that to the trailer.

As I already mentioned, I’m not really a “Star Trek” fan, but I have picked up a few things by osmosis from watching others shows (the one thing I do know, however, is that Jean-Luc Picard can run circles around Kirk). After watching the trailer, I got the urge to watch all the series. From the campy original to the Scott Bakula led “Enterprise,” I’m willing to sit for days on end, turning even more into a gelatinous blob, just so that I won’t miss a beat when “Star Trek” comes out on May 8, 2009.

The one downside to this stupendous trailer is that Trekkies will be less reserved about discussing “Star Trek” in public. No matter. If they get too uppity, we can just have girls talk to them. That’ll send them running to the hills.
