Online magazine aims to provide students with health information

Students can now read about health and health issues through their student e-mails and online.

About a month ago, the first issue of Student Health 101 magazine was distributed to students, said Health educator Steve Lux. This is a monthly health and wellness magazine that is free to students, he added.

The magazine is from a national publication called College Health Services and is distributed to any college or university who wants to buy it, Lux said.

Lux said the magazine is sponsored and material is contributed by NIU’s Student Health and Wellness Community of Practice, which includes the Health Enhancement, Health Services, the Student Recreation Center and the Counseling Student Center.

He said Health Services has provided information about flu season in the next issue. “It’s nice to promote an upcoming program,” he said.

Lux feels the design of the magazine will catch student’s attention since there are a lot of animated cartoons, sounds and videos.

Students feel the magazine provides healthy information to follow and to be familiar with.

Jennifer Erickson, senior communications major, said she is tired of reading magazines about celebrities and would read this to focus on real life and health.

“It focuses on our own reality,” Erickson said. “I think it’s an important way to keep yourself healthy because you don’t always know the answer.”

Katie Kuykendall, freshman undecided major, said she would only read the magazine if it was in a paper form, but she is still interested in reading about health.

“It’s important that people are aware of certain health-related issues,” she said.

Lux said college students are in the peak of their physical health and sometimes they don’t always pay attention to what they eat or drink. He added this magazine would provide students with information to follow for everyday life.

He said the magazine has something for everybody.
