Nov. 4
At 11:22 a.m., University Police responded to a report of a fight in progress in Grant South. Upon arrival, the fight had ended, and the victims and the offenders were gone. Officers are working to identify all involved. Case is pending.
Nov. 6
At 12:30 a.m., University Police went to Grant North for a fight in progress in the Grant North computer lab. When officers arrived, they separated the individuals and arrested Timothy D. McGowan, 19, of Chicago, for battery. McGowan struck an individual with a chair due to an ongoing verbal argument. Officers booked McGowan at the NIU Police Department, and released him after posting bond.
Nov. 7
• At 12:39 a.m., University Police went to Grant South to investigate a strong odor of burnt cannabis. Officers saw, in plain view, a bag with a green leafy substance inside of it and a pipe sitting next to it. Officers arrested Maria A. Gueringer, 19, for possession of under 30 grams of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Officers booked Gueringer at the NIU Police Department, and released after posting bond. Three other students who were present were referred to Judicial Affairs.
• At 1:23 a.m., University Police responded to a report of a broken lounge window in Lincoln Hall. Officers met with the offender, who admitted to breaking the window and unlawfully consuming alcohol. The offender was referred to Judicial Affairs.
• At 2:04 p.m., University Police responded to a report of a stolen cell phone at Grant South. Victim said three people met him in the lobby claiming to have his cell phone, and were willing to return it in exchange for $40. The victim refused to pay, and later identified the three offenders. Officers questioned the individuals, who admitted to asking for $40, but denied having the cell phone. All three offenders were referred to Judicial Affairs for fraudulent behavior.
• At 11:48 p.m., officers noticed a strong odor emanating from a room in Grant South. The occupant of the room invited officers in and admitted he had smoked all of his cannabis and had drug paraphernalia. A search of the room yielded only drug paraphernalia. The occupant was referred to Judicial Affairs.
Nov. 8
• At 2:07 a.m., University Police saw a vehicle make an unsafe lane change. Officers pulled the vehicle over and suspected the driver of having consumed alcohol. The driver failed field sobriety tests. Officers arrested Jameson W. Clark for driving under the influence and cited him for unsafe lane usage. Clark was taken to the NIU Police Department for booking, where he posted bond and was released
• At 11:41 a.m., University Police investigated a battery at Douglas Hall D Wing. The victim reported being pushed in the chest and poked in the eye. He refused to sign a complaint for battery against the offender, who was referred to Judicial Affairs.
Nov. 9
• At 4:23 a.m., a domestic battery was reported at Stevenson South. A former girlfriend of an individual became angry and struck her ex-boyfriend several times, upset over the breakup of their relationship. The former boyfriend did not file a complaint. The case was referred to Judicial Affairs.
• At 5:09 a.m., University Police responded to a report of three males fighting at Stevenson South. A verbal argument erupted into a physical altercation that stopped voluntarily. Officers interceded and escorted one male from the premises. The other two left on their own. Minor injuries were reported. All three men were referred to Judicial Affairs.
• At 11:27 p.m., University Police responded to a report of a possible battery at Grant North Tower C. Two people went to visit an acquaintance there and, after greeting him, the person became enraged and injured two people. One victim on the scene displayed a swollen eye and chipped tooth, while another was thrown against a door. Officers arrested Thomas A. Smafield, 19, of DeKalb, for battery. Officers booked Smafield at the NIU Police Department, where he was transported to DeKalb County Jail.
