The Student Association had its last meeting of the semester on Sunday evening and showed it was not slacking.

In attendance was SA President Brent Keller, and 33 out of 39 senators. The SA approved a new senator, officially recognized a new student organization and approved an SA Supreme Court justice.

Sophomore marketing major Ascenyo Carson, the newly approved senator, has served as a non-senator member in the SA Finance Committee.

“I’m excited and I’m happy to voice my opinion because I have something to say and I want to take steps in moving with the progress of this campus,” Carson said.

The new student organization approved, the NIU Collegiate Sales Advisory Board, works within the NIU sales program of the College of Business to recruit students and facilitate the interactions between prospective marketing students and sales professionals in the market.

“It’s a real pleasure to be finally accepted by the Student Association,” said Alex Miller, president of the organization. “To have a student organization work with professionals in your sales program is definitely something NIU needed.”

Andrew Ringel, a junior political science major, was approved as the fourth SA Supreme Court justice. He was preceded by Aaron Funfsinn, Eric Johnson and Paulette Tolene, who comprise the remainder of the current supreme court. One seat is still vacant within the court.

After much debate among the SA, Ringel was approved in a 17-14 vote with one abstention.

“I’m very excited that I got the appointment to the Student Association Supreme Court and I look forward to working with the other members of the supreme court in the future,” Ringel said.

With the induction of new members into the SA, the end of the semester also signaled the departure of some members.

Among those who had submitted their letters of resignation were Director of Academic Affairs Mohsin Chowdhury, and senators Sam Fuqua, Fanon Perteet and Dominique Wheatley.

Senator Kierra Jones was also permanently removed from the senate for having never attended a meeting this semester.

With the SA’s last meeting, Speaker of the Senate Matthew Venaas looked back on the past semester as being a productive one. He said over 20 student organizations were approved, $25,000 was allocated to Campus Activities Board and four of the five seats in an empty SA Supreme Court were filled.

“I think with the semester as a whole we’ve been pretty productive,” Venaas said. “There’s a lot of very exciting opportunities coming up next semester, and as much as we’ve accomplished thus far this semester, I’m also looking really forward to next semester.”
