Chesney makes life simpler with new CD

By LINDSEY KASTNING

With mellow tracks and messages about living life, Kenny Chesney’s latest album proves that as he ages, his wisdom increases.

Opening the album with the track “I’m Alive,” Chesney sings, “Today is the first day of the rest of my life and I’m alive.” This slow, mellow song sounds like a lullaby and opens the album with the image of the country singer being a father, whispering to his children, his biggest fans.

As Chesney swoons on “Way Down Here,” the hearts of all who listen to this track will be taken

back to simpler times when life was full of less worry and stress.

In the next serene selection, “Boats,” the guitar fools the ear into believing the wind is really blowing in the listener’s ear as Chesney tells a story of sailing out on the calm waters in the perfect boat. The words of the tune paint a lovely picture of leaving life behind to capture some alone time.

Through the tune “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven,” the singer takes fans by surprise as the track spices up the tune through fast-paced drum beats. Although the song is oddly out of place from the mellow tunes about life, it does wake up the listener who previously may have fallen into dreams of sugar plums and rainbows from the light opening tunes.

With the song, “Keys in the Conch Shell,” Chesney brings back his newfound, overplayed theme of beaches. The song talks about playing with a sailboat in the waves and missing a past love.

With such stereotypical country song themes, Chesney should have left this beach off the album.

The title track, “That Lucky Old Sun,” is absolutely the shining moment of the album. Combining Chesney’s talent with legend Willie Nelson’s makes this track rise above the rest. As Nelson opens the tune, his familiar scratchy voice begs for empathy toward the hard working man. Chesney made a wise choice in including Nelson, because no one could have made this tune more heartfelt or brought back the true artistry of country music at its best.

The country superstar has finally slowed things down to create a new more adult sound. “Lucky Old Sun” is perfect for calming down after a stressful day, but fails to inspire the listener to get up and dance.

Maybe Chesney just expects his fans to lie on the beach all day. A pleasant thought, but impractical.
