Health Enhancement encouraging ‘safer drinking’
October 16, 2008
If you’re going to drink, do it safely.
This is the message in the prototype designs of senior communications major Ashley Harrington and sophomore computer science major Justin Oltz, the finalists in Health Enhancement’s Safe Drinking Campaign Idea competition.
Health educator Steve Lux said the campaign is not geared toward stopping students from drinking, but in reducing the negative consequence of doing so.
“We want to talk about for those who choose to drink … reducing the negative consequences,” Lux said.
Lux said they wanted all students to be able to participate in the competition, which is why they called it an “idea” competition, and not a design one. Both Harrington and Oltz worked with Yuma Nakada, assistant director of design and public relations of Student Affairs.
When designing her poster, Harrington said she wanted to move away from stereotypical posters like, “if you weigh this much, drink this much.”
“You can party, but stay safe at the same time,” Harrington said about her poster. “It’s more or less after the fact that you’ve been partying.”
Harrington’s poster is shaped like a corkboard, with different safety tips posted to it like reminders. Her poster advises students to use the Late Night Ride Service, spend the night at a friend’s place and don’t walk home alone.
Oltz, on the other hand, wanted to incorporate his love for computers into his poster. What he came up with was a poster made up as a computer screen. Reminders of eating before drinking and bringing a friend to parties appear as pop-up windows.
“Minimize the risk,” Oltz said.
The competition started last year, with Health Enhancement advertising it in several different types of media, including the Northern Star. They only received 13 or 14 submissions, but Lux admitted the number was lower because the due date was initially scheduled around the time of the Feb. 14 shootings.
“We probably didn’t get the volume of submissions we had hoped because of what had happened,” Lux said.
The finalists and designs were revealed at a ceremony at the Gallery Lounge in the Holmes Student Center on Wednesday.
