Otto’s to host ‘Creature Feature’ horror movies

By TONY MARTIN

The days of movie double features are over.

Today’s big budget Hollywood epics require total concentration and a minimum cover charge of $5.

To the broke college student, that is not a plausible thing, which ultimately results in a poor knowledge of cinema. Even the cheesiest old B-movies still cost $4.50 to rent at the local video store.

Fortunately, DeKalb’s local production team is here to help out. For the last two weeks in October, Otto’s Nightclub, 118 E. Lincoln Highway, is running a weekly “Creature Feature.”

The events will consist of two old horror movies and a live punk band in between. Movies like “Army of Darkness,” “Night of the Living Dead” and other classics have been shown all month long while some of DeKalb’s best local acts play a 45-minute set between shows.

The best part? It’s all free.

People can feel free to pop in, catch a few minutes of Bruce Campbell fighting his own hand and go elsewhere.

Or, they can stay for the entire show and catch two classic horror movies and a set, free of charge. Free is the best price, and there is absolutely no reason why on a Wednesday night people could find better things to do.

Last week, zombies invaded Otto’s, and locals Sleeping Under 47 did their thing between “Army of Darkness” and “Night of the Creeps.”

Tonight, The U.S. Skeletons will take the stage while the movies on tap are “Dead Alive” and “Evil Dead.” Hopefully, the show will turn into a rowdy good time, and the crowd will begin to act like “Rocky Horror Picture Show” is on as they start yelling at the screen.

For the purists, the actual “Rocky Horror Picture Show” is showing with the Riverbilly Cousin Touchers and “Shock Treatment” on Oct. 29.

You better believe I will be there, dressed as Meatloaf, singing the “Time Warp” at the top of my lungs.

It would be more fun if you came as well.

The Creature Feature will begin at 8:30 p.m. tonight with a showing of “Dead Alive.”
