‘Better Know A Character: Ganstalicious from ‘The Boondocks’

By ORLANDO LARA

Trying to discover who you are? Look someplace else, this is “Better Know a Character.”

Today’s character is animated rapper and entrepreneur Gangstalicious from Adult Swim’s “The Boondocks.”

Voiced by Mod Def, the clenched-teeth speaking gangsta made it big with his 2004 hit, “Thuggin Luv.” One year later he shot into superstardom after being shot (again) while singing “I Got Shot.” Due to the ironicallity of it all, Gangstalicious was left on stage to bleed for 45 minutes.

In the spring of 2008, Gangstalicious released “Homies Over Hoes,” a man-on-man friendship anthem that encouraged men to “Do the homey” while bumping chests. During that same year, Gangstalicious was outed when Jessica “Wonder Cheeks” Ethelburg, a former rap-video dancer, released a tell-all book revealing that he was, in fact, gay. Fearing the world was not ready for a gay rapper, he adamantly denied the accusation. Gangstalicious defends himself by saying his highly feminine clothing line was created with the “street soldier” in mind, he is a bad shot only because he prefers his own guns and that he was kissed passionately, foreign style, by the man; he did not reciprocate.

The jury is still out on whether “Wonder Cheeks” ‘s revelation actually hurt Gangstalicious’s career.

The only certainty is that Gangstalicious is gay. Sorry homophobes.
