Huskies keep home fires burning

A five-game home series winning streak is on the line as the NIU men’s soccer team hosts Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. today at the new soccer and track complex in DeKalb.

The game will be NIU’s last home contest of the regular season.

The Badgers are looking for their first win in DeKalb in over 10 years. Since 1995, Wisconsin has dropped the last five games to the Huskies when on NIU’s home field. The Huskies have gone 5-1-3 at home this season and have built a 6-5-0 all-time series against the Badgers.

Despite having a 5-0-0 home record over Wisconsin since 1995, freshman Brad Horton knows that the Badgers are capable of breaking the streak. Horton said that it will be a tough match-up and could help NIU prepare for the post-season.

“I think the game is not only going to be a good game, but it’s really going to help us in the post-season,” Horton said. “They’re a good team, so it’s going to be a good test for us.”

Wisconsin (8-6-2, 1-4-1 Big Ten) has lost six games on the season, with every loss by a one-goal margin.

Until last weekend, the team was without a win in the Big Ten, but now comes to DeKalb riding a 4-1 victory over Penn State. In the game, the Badgers scored four unanswered goals in the second period to grab the conference win. Senior Victor Diaz also notched a career-high three assists in the match-up.

The Huskies are also coming off a conference win after scoring a lone goal against Bowling Green in a 1-0 win.

Horton capitalized on a long ball from keeper Joe Zimka to put NIU over the Falcons. NIU head coach Steve Simmons said the win has given the Huskies momentum coming into the week’s big schedule.

“[Last week] was a very good performance heading into both Wisconsin and Duke,” the coach said. “I mean, Bang! We go Big Ten, ACC. That’s why we schedule these games. They’re big.”

Throughout the season, the Huskies have been able to outscore opponents by a 24-16 margin. In those match-ups, NIU has allowed 1.07 goals per game, and has blanked six opponents.

Horton leads the team in scoring with six goals and four game winners.

The team averages almost 20 shots per game and owns a 1.60 goals scored per game average.
