Ten songs that made me wish I liked dancing

10. “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” Cyndi Lauper
What can I say? Sometimes a girl just wants to let her hair down and dance. As soon as I hear that first synthesizer screech, I picture myself wearing a silk scarf, drinking a martini and dancing with all my friends in a convertible while driving through New York City.
9. “The Newton” Big Fig
Better known as the jingle from the 1970s Fig Newton commercial. The carnival-esque piano and lyrics like “Wrap the inside in the outside. Is it good? Darn-tooting,” makes me want to put on a fig costume and dance around on one leg.
8. “Thriller” Michael Jackson
There are only seven things better than Vincent Price rapping. This great song also has one of the most unappreciated dance routines that no one bothered to learn, except for that one part where the zombies do that awesome sideways march with their creepy Dracula hands.
7. “Take My Breath Away” Berlin
It doesn’t matter that this Academy Award-winning song was recorded on a single synthesizer, or that it’s corny. This song lends itself perfectly to be performed through the majestic act of interpretive dance. With soft, slow movements and frequent twirls, I cannot wait to not dance to this song at someone’s wedding.
6. “Business Time” Flight of the Conchords
The funky beats and highly suggestive lyrics make me want to grind and squat-thrust as close as possible to any woman who will let me. The simple and coherent lyrics also allow me to mouth the words, giving the appearance of someone who can sing.
5. “You’re the Best” Joe Esposito
This “The Karate Kid” song makes me want to combine the art of dance with the ability to take down a complete ’80s-era jerk. This song gets bonus points because it makes any physical activity seem way cooler.
4. “Soul Man” Blues Brothers
The guitar riff is perfect for doing the Elwood – exaggeratedly running in place – cartwheels and back flips.
3. “Take a Chance On Me” ABBA
Danceable songs like this are the reason ABBA is one of the best-selling groups of all time. Listening to this track is like watching a monkey pet a puppy, but with your ears. The happiness just takes over my body and I got to let it out.
2. “The Final Countdown” Europe
The great thing is that every dance imaginable works with this song. And as someone who can’t dance, I can just flop around and still manage to look like John Travolta from “Saturday Night Fever.”
1. “Move This (Shake That Body)” Technotronic
This track stages a two-front war against my natural reluctance to dance. First, the beat gets me going. Second, this song encourages me to dance, making me seem rude if I don’t oblige. No matter who else covers it, the essence of the song remains, making it so much easier to look like a fool.
