Review: Blackstone

By JEN HANCE

Open seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Blackstone Restaurant, 1262 W. Lincoln Highway, is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Atmosphere

The restaurant is dimly lit, and the front is rather dark. However, in the main seating area, there are nice windows which brighten up the area.

There’s a bar at the front of the restaurant and high tables located close to the large flat screen TV. In the main room, there are typical booths. While waiting for my food to come, I couldn’t help but notice a dirty table.

Someone had obviously gotten up and left, but their empty plates sat at the front of the restaurant for over 25 minutes, greeting all of the incoming customers with a mess.

Service

When one man asked for the ingredients to the soup because of his wife’s allergies, his waitress told him, and upon returning to the kitchen, grumbled loudly: “I don’t have time to deal with people like that.”

Immediately after, I was interrupted in my own conversation at the bar by the cook yelling at the wait staff. It was a shame that my waitress’ kind demeanor was not shared by her other coworkers, as it brought down the mood of my breakfast.

Food

Though the wait was long, the food was worth it. I decided on the Blackstone Skillet since it was the namesake breakfast menu item. It was a delicious and hearty skillet with a great flavor and was served with a side of pancakes, which were decent, and the plentiful meal gave me plenty to take home for later.

Price

The price was amazing for all the food that was ordered. For a bowl of soup, two coffees and two main dishes, the ticket came out to under $20; on top of that, there is a 10 percent discount to students who show their ID.

Overall

The overall experience of eating at Blackstone is average. My visit in particular was not very pleasant, but the food made it worth-while. I will probably go back for another of the delicious skillets, but I’ll be sure to go when they are less busy, and ask for a booth.
