Filming of broadway production of “Rent” to show at DeKalb
September 9, 2008
This month, DeKalb’s Carmike Theatre, 2160 Sycamore Road, will be showing an uncut version of one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time.
“Rent” ended its 12-year run on Broadway on Sept. 7 and was filmed to be shown in theaters throughout the country.
The socially-charged piece was the brainchild of Jonathan Larson, a playwright from New York, who said he had always wanted to bring musical theater to the MTV generation. Although he didn’t live to see his play performed, it went on to become a Pulitzer and Tony Award winning show and the second longest running show in Broadway history right on the heels of “Phantom of the Opera.”
The play tells the story of a group of bohemians living in New York’s East Village who struggle each day to live and pay their rent. Everyone strives for success and acceptance, but must endure the obstacles of everyday life in New York including illness, poverty and the ever-increasing AIDS epidemic.
Now the chance has been given for all to see what “Rent” was like on stage.
Now is your the chance to see what promises to be the most powerful performance from the best seats in the house.
“Rent” will be shown for only five days from Sept. 24-28. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the theater or online, at www.carmike.com for $20.
