Mac vs. PC: to each their own

By JENNIFER KURLAND

We have another competition on our hands, but you won’t see any teams battling it out. This time it’s a debate over computers, and college students are especially affected.

Computers are used for a large amount of work, so which is better: Mac or PC? The battle is on.

When the original iPod came out, Apple grew quickly. With different types of user-friendly computers that work side-by-side with an iPod, why wouldn’t consumers want a computer that looks nice and works well?

“In the end, buying a PC might be cheaper, but you would still have to buy all the programs and spyware for it, making your cost go up,” said Raquel Flores, freshman sociology major. “For my Mac computer, I plugged it into another Mac, pressed one button, and all the programs I needed were there.”

Still, for the “cheap” college student, Macs are not so wallet-friendly. PCs are lower in price. Plus, PCs are reliable for simple tasks such as typing an English paper or updating hardware.

“I play a ton of games on my computer and if I were to buy a Mac, I would have to buy the Mac version of some of these games,” said Michael Denizer, freshman English major. “Macs look cool, but I do not want to spend all that money.”

According to an Aug. 15 article from The University Times in North Carolina, the PC has both a lower starting model and a higher top end. Macs, on the other hand, tend to be very difficult to upgrade as far as the hardware is concerned.

“I am really at a peace-of-mind when I use my Mac,” said Gary Gates, University Bookstore assistant manager. “I have been using it for 15 years and have never had to worry I was going to lose any data or even think about a virus.”

Gates stated Macs are less likely to catch computer viruses, which requires less spyware. The programs are very simple to transfer to one another; all you have to do is drag it over.

People believe their data is their life.

Have you ever lost your cell phone and felt like the world was going to end? If you had a Mac computer, losing your data is not something to be concerned about.

“Macs are very user-friendly, come with all Mac software for free and if you bought one and turned it on, it would take about five minutes to get it up and going,” Gates said.

Macs do sound like dream computers, especially if you have ever had any problems with a PC. But the answer to which type of computer is better is neither. If you find a glitch in one, you can find it in the other. Buying the best computer for you really depends on the type of work you will use it for. So do your research because only you will know what the best computer is for yourself.
