Bill Engvall provides laughter to NIU community

If laughter is really the best medicine, then Bill Engvall’s audience was in peak physical condition.

As the comedian took the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday night, the audience anticipated the laughter that would follow. Shockingly, Engvall came with an even larger agenda than making people laugh; he also made them think about a variety of life situations. Though the Convocation Center was not overflowing with people, the audience size was large and full of life as they laughed until their stomachs hurt.

“The best part of the show was watching how he laughed at his own jokes,” said freshman art major Leigh Sebastian.

“It’s great to be here in Huskie land,” said Engvall to the audience.

What an experience it was to have Engvall make a stop to the cornfields when he could have been focusing more on his hit TV show, which is heading into its third season, or focusing on major cities with his act. The community certainly appreciated his stop in DeKalb.

When most people think of comedy shows, they think of one person telling a bunch of dirty jokes trying to make the audience laugh. Engvall, on the other hand, proved there are more genres of comedy to play with.

One of the more impressive highlights of the show was seeing how Engvall really connected with his audience to tell jokes about growing up, feeling dorky, flying planes, marriage, family values and understanding the opposite sex.

From the female perspective, it was appreciated that Engvall did not trash women.

Instead, Engvall’s jokes focused on his disbelief as to how his wife can put up with him, how she watches out for him and how they work as a team to support one another.

Of course there were some jokes about the bedroom and bodily functions, but they were done tastefully, as Engvall made sure that each joke was as clean-cut as possible while still trying to make people laugh.

“It is clear you still want some clean comedy on TV,” Engvall said.

This comment also held true to his clean act that everyone could enjoy.

Some comedians focus on putting down another race, but Engvall remained classy as none of his jokes included controversial topics.

Engvall delivered a to-die-for show as the audience laughed from beginning to end.
