NIU students looking for an affordable outfit will no longer be able to turn to Steve and Barry’s, in DeKalb.

The company announced in July it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

According to the company’s Web site, Steve and Barry’s was then acquired by BHY S&B Holdings LLC, a newly formed affiliate of investment firms Bay Harbour Management and York Capital Management Aug. 26.

A press release on the Steve and Barry’s Web site states a majority of Steve and Barry’s 276 stores will remain open. However, according to a DeKalb Steve and Barry’s store representative, who would not give his name for the story, the DeKalb store will not be spared.

The representative said they were told two weeks ago that their store, located at 2500 Sycamore Road, would be closed. The representative said they did not know the exact date of closure, but they knew that it would be toward the end of September.

The company is trying to do what’s best for the employees of the store, even though they are shutting it down, the representative said.

“They were letting people transfer if they want to and they are setting up bonus plans,” the representative said.

Steve and Barry’s Spokesperson Howard Schactersaid the company is closing stores to try to maintain their cash flow.

“We intend to run a smaller base of Steve & Barry’s stores, better positioning the company to reach its profitability goals,” Schacter said in an e-mail, after he could not be contacted by phone. “We deeply regret the impact this store closing will have on our associates, our customers and the community.”

The DeKalb store has 15 to 20 employees, but only a few of them are NIU students, the representative said.

A public relations representative said they do not have a closing date for the DeKalb store and they do not share any employee information or figures.

The Steve and Barry’s store representative would not give the phone number of the corporate office for comment.

The Steve and Barry’s Web site does not list the phone number for the corporate office. The only phone number listed is for vendors to call about Chapter 11 inquiries only.
