De Niro, Pacino worth seeing in ‘Righteous Kill’

“Righteous Kill” – 8/10

Starring: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, John Leguizamo, Donnie Wahlberg, Carla Gugino

Plot: Two New York City cops (De Niro, Pacino) search for a person who is killing suspected criminals. Soon, other members of the NYPD realize the killer may be an officer, and the story begins to unravel toward a twist-ending.

The Good: Pacino and De Niro join together for the first time since 1995’s “Heat”, and they both do a great job of doing what they do best. At times when the film seemed somewhat slow, Pacino’s performance held it together. Many are upset with the typecasting that De Niro and Pacino have endured, but playing law enforcement is simply what the two were born to do.

The Bad: Several times in the film, De Niro is seen in some very unnecessary sex scenes featuring his costar Carla Gugino. Luckily the scenes are very short and never expose too much.

The casting of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Spider was obviously a ploy to draw a younger crowd that may not be familiar with the work of De Niro and Pacino. This is only slightly upsetting, due to the fact he is barely featured and has a minor role in the plot.

The Low-Down: The film takes some of its cues from the Dirty Harry sequel “The Enforcer,” where a cop begins killing pimps and drug dealers, but “Kill” puts a different twist on the plot. The film is worth the money to see De Niro and Pacino act together, for what may be the last time. “Righteous Kill” isn’t exactly “The Godfather Part II,” but it tops the pure trash that we’ve seen in theaters for the past couple of weeks now.
